Yes, my Rhode Island brother (from another mother), Romen Rok and I are performing in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I'm amped because we are getting a chance to perform along with the Iluminate crew. I got their CD a few years ago and was happy to hear real hip hop was live and well...somewhere in this world. (<----DOUBLE thanks to Pam) We'll be down there for 10 days so I hope to familiarize myself with a lot more of the music scene down there.

You know? I wasn't going to post it because who the heck in the states can make it to South America -haha...but then I thought...why the hell not? I'm amped for this show. There's a possibility of another gig down there but nonetheless, Argentina...here we come.

Wow, I just realized it's been a minute since I posted. I've been jaded. Either that or the holidays kicked me in the groin. Either that....or....ehhhh....I can't call it.

A project I engineered...

One of the albums I've had the pleasure of working on last year was Dj Signify's upcoming release, Of Cities. I was head engineer for the project. The effort features collaborations with Aesop Rock and Blockhead. It will be available on Bully Records on January 20th, 2009.

I must say I'm very proud to have been apart of this work; Signify is one of my best friends. I'm constantly amazed at his ability to keep within the bounds of a similar sound and style all the while covering new ground; dipping into genres like glitch, kraut, and new wave. I'm yet to meet a fellow producer who incorporates such extensive research into their music so effortlessly.

Below is the song, Low Tide featuring Aesop Rock. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to feature another track on my New Year's podcast. Check it out.

I was on NPR recently. It was for a panel show called "Action Speaks", broadcast live at AS220. It was truly an honor to be apart of Action Speaks let alone sit on one of their panels. To say I was intimidated would be an understatement. Going in I was almost certain I was the red meat of the panel. Listen to find out how it all goes down. Action Speaks 10.26.08 - 1957 - Dissent magazine publishes Norman Mailer's “The White Negro: Superficial Reflections on the Hipster”

This essay by Norman Mailer recorded a wave of young white people in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s who liked jazz and swing music so much that they adopted Black culture as their own. It was first published in the Fall 1957 issue of Dissent, and was later reprinted in Advertisements for Myself in 1959. Mailer’s so-called “white negroes” were White American male bohemians who enshrouded themselves in Black clothing styles, language, and music while distancing themselves from White society. This movement influenced the hipsters of the 1940s, the beats of the 1950s, the mods of the 1960s, and the "W" word of later decades. What is the connection between race music and dance -- including contemporary hip-hop culture -- to the music and dance of the White mainstream? We will discuss the way marginalized cultures often become models for those alienated from the culture at large and how Black culture has been stereotyped and altered in the service of others. So the election is over. In a sense, I guess I am ready to start blogging again. I became an election junkie over the past two months. Every morning, I’d start my day with Morning Joe on MSNBC. From there, I would listen to Lionel on Air America Radio as I checked email, surfed my daily web, etc. I usually exercised around noon usually listening to the audio versions of “Audacity of Hope” and “Dreams Of My Father”. Then I rested my brain for a few hours before turning the tube back on to peep Road To The White House with David Gregory, Hardball with Chris Matthews, Countdown with Keith Olberman, The Rachel Maddow Show, and then finally 360 with Anderson Cooper on CNN. All of this programming became the soundtrack to my life as I went about my day.

I fell in love with Nate Silva, Eugene Robinson, David Gergen, and Donna Brazille. I already loved Paul Begala, Campbell Brown, and Tamron Hall. In cotrast I learned to hate Matt Drudge, Sean Hannity, and Bill O’Reilly more than ever –which, I know, seems almost impossible. I would usually just laugh at them before. My laughter of Hannity started back in 2004 when after the first debate he praised George Bush and assuredly claimed the president had won the contest handily. (If you recall, Kerry aggressively demolished Bush in their first debate to the point where you felt embarrassed for both candidates.) O’ Reilly was thrown the ultimate curveball when Obama decided to go on his show back in September. O’Reilly didn’t know what to do afterward; even he called Obama, “steely”. I can't even begin on Drudge.....seriously. Although I implore people to watch all four parts of Obama on O’Reilly. Yes, become an election junkie like me!!

My transition into complete geek didn't go without ribbing / punishment. My good friend Quo made two gifs of me on my myspace page.

As a result of obsessively watching history in the making, I’ve gotten extremely backed up with updates. So you can expect a lot of new announcements from now on. I have a lot of stuff to post.

Barack Obama

So my wonderful girlfriend and I drove to Manchester, NH to see Barack Obama speak. We woke up at 4:30 AM, left at 5:30 AM, and got there at 7:30 AM. Entrance was to start at 8 AM so we were amped to get there a half hour early. Much to our expectation, we got our place in line about a 1/4 mile from the entrance....and we were at the BEGINNING of the line. Yikes!

The event was to start at 10:30 AM. Why two and half hours? To get everyone in there; the line was that DEEP. We got our position in the park an hour later at about 8:45 and were pretty close to the stage, 20 feet away. I remember thinking to myself "Oh no, I have to wait for three and half more hours before this guy talks." Wrong. They started at 10:30 on the button.

There were a few speakers before the man but each of their spots were under five minutes. Then all of a sudden the bus pulls up. A few minutes later Barack exits and heads to the stage. I'm thinking to myself "yeah, they'll draw this out for all it's worth". WRONG. Here we go:

First off, all of this "Obama is a rockstar" stuff needs to go. This man gets off his bus -no entourage besides the Secret Service, walks up on stage, and starts. Just like that. No stopping, no taking a break behind the stage, no building anticipation of fanfare. Perfect example: he came on stage with the woman who introduces him. No waiting behind the stage and coming out like he just won an award. The name of the woman who introduced him is escaping me at the moment...probably because it was so brief and to the point. BEAUTIFUL.

My girlfriend and I often joke that Barack's "head to the side, regal" stance reminds us of my brother and his wife Heather's siberian husky, Carlito. He does it during pauses in his speeches -usually when the crowd is going bonkers with cheering- and we just can't help but smile. Here he does it in anticipation. All cute tidbits aside, what an honor it is to see this man speak.

I can't tell you how important it was this event was ON TIME. I might be over-romanticizing this because I'm an anxious freak and can't stand still for too long but...that spoke volumes to me. This campaign, message, and presentation is simple, to the point, and air TIGHT. It HAS to be and they execute masterfully.

This is good representation of how close we were. My only regret was that we didn't wake up a few hours earlier to be first in line. It wasn't so much to be front row but to be in the "O" area that Obama enters to greet people after the engagement. Every venue is different and there's no way of anticipating where he will greet people. The last picture in this set is the man during the aforementioned walkthrough.

Watching the RNC I was sickened by how many WHITE, OLD people were at the event just LOVING it!! I mean, what did I really expect? I don't know but I was simply aghast at how obvious the division in this country is. In fact, sadly -probably because I'm sensitive- I found myself scouring at older people thinking to myself "they don't know". To my sheer delight I was wrong AGAIN. There were lots of older people at this event today, they might've outnumbered the 34 and under crowd.

Case in point: that woman in the bottom left hand corner was EXCITED to see Obama. It got me AMPED!! I mean she wasn't just there to see him, she was JUMPING. It was great! This is not 2004. TRUST ME. Barack Obama REFUSES to be the default candidate. He is the candidate. Get with it, now.

The illest part about Obama is how seeing him speak -on TV mostly, luckily this time in person- kills my own cynicism about the boogie man (see: red state people, older generations, big oil, other problem factions of this nation, etc.) . It's too obvious and cliche to assume everything will be spoiled again. This campaign is above that and it's inspiring as hell. Here's a link to the speech. Here's my measly video contribution.

This is about as close as we got to the man. My zoom was off because I was in a hurry to snap away. My arm was extended well above my head, attempting to tower over everyone else's cameras. Sam & Dave played: "Hold On, I'm Coming."

Ok, its been long enough...

Back in April Munky King Toys in Los Angeles released a 7" of my music. They also brought me out to the big C state for a short run of shows. My man Maker (of Glue) and Dj R-Rated were my guest openers for each event -sprinkle in my man Dj Colby. It should've been the other way around -haha. I was also accompanied by two lovely artists from the Pocket Full Of Monsters Crew named Angry Woebots and Peeekaboo Monster. In all, I had a blast. I've posted some PHOTOS HERE.

The Lonely Town 7" was a limited edition pressing. Within the main number of 7"s there were other select renditions of the product:

The black and orange sticker versions are impossible; I don't even have one -haha. For the right price I'm willing to part with some of what I have left.

Talk about limping to the finish line.

I've averaged about a show per weekend since the last week of May. All of these gigs with the exception of one (at the Nuyorican) all occurred in my hometown of Providence. As a result, I tried to make each set entirely different. Add in finishing three albums, starting three new projects, and a slew of side order. Now I'm just glad everything is over because I'm exhausted. And it definitely showed in the past two gigs.

The local 121 DJ set was more of a mix up; I simply put the wrong date when I was booked. Yes, I'm definitely taking applications for management -haha. Last night at The Indie Arts Fest was grand. I had some tech difficulties with my mixer. Ehh...what are you gonna do? Besides that I thought it turned out OK thanks to Romen Rok, my unofficial hypeman, and my wonderful missus for manually melding my malfunctioning equipment.

A slight recap of the local festivals:

Indie Arts Fest - I had to follow a face melting set by Triangle Forest; they slayed. FACK!

Sound Session - Blak and I had to follow the governor of Rhode Island, Chachi accompanied by a nine piece band. Merrrrrrrrdduuurrrrrr bredren!

Fools Balls - Rhode Show steals it....always. But that's thanks to us not being crashed by The What Cheer Brigade. Phew!

In short, I'm completely humbled by what I saw this summer. In regard to the level of music around here, my city makes me so damn proud. Other "scene-like"aspects make me want to puke. (And no, the former shouldn't be applauded nor should the latter be accepted simply because we're so "small".)

That said, I need to go back to the drawing board. I shall rest for two months with live performances. Around then I should have a couple of really unique gigs coming up I'll be very happy to announce once all solidified. Until then please stay here with me because I'll actually have more time to make more updates and contributions.

These performances will be held outside in the back lot off Westminster St - you can't miss it. This series of shows will be the 112 After Party being held at the Black Rep. It's going to be stacked. RHYTHM INCURSIONS podcast #2

Here is my radio slot I just did for the infamous Rhythm Incursions on 104.4 Resonance FM, London, UK. In fact, they asked me to be a regular contributor to the show. They originally asked me to be a monthly guest but I went with bi-monthly. That said, every other month you can expect a new podcast from yours truly. The only (somewhat) downside (hahah) is the fellas would like me to talk more and write abstracts like the following:

I normally do a big un-paused mix of exclusives and originals but…meh…I wasn’t really in the mood for any of that this time out. It’s summer. I’m busy. It’s humid. I’m weening myself onto a fish diet. Cutting the chocolate is making me cranky - haha. I'm sick of people mentioning how much weight I've gained only to tell me "but you look better, more healthy....seriously". Whatever the excuse, it’s not always a well planned out party. I hit points -like now- where I’m completely exhausted by music and am forced to find new and interesting ways to keep myself enthusiastic. I guess it’s all about being patient. I hate how pretentious this all sounds but ehhh…if it is, then it is.

As the tracklisting goes on, particularly in the middle, a common theme is redemption and compensation. Great lyrics and music will be sacrificed by a corny, almost comical, voice (David Amram). On the inverse, a downer and dragger will be saved by an extraordinaty vocal (The Savage Rose). Cynical tones will be matched and trumped by beautiful music (Denny Guy). There are tracks with bacon so thick, I would never normally play them in such condition unless I felt they were stellar (Smokestack Lightning, Electric Prunes). Included are songs whose opening minute deceive you in a way that almost makes you mad because it naturally captures the one (and only) thing about 60’s California innocence Brian Wilson couldn’t (Wendy & Bonnie). Others that repeatedly abuse your attention span with jam session hooks only to reward you handsomely with incredible breakdown after breakdown right as you’re about to give up on it (Linn County). Can you hang?

The road has me forgetting stuff!! And this one...lord, please forgive me.

I had the chance to score a play. More importantly, I had the chance to score a play for the Providence Black Repertory Company. This is very special and dear to me. The Black Rep has been supporting a plethora of art for a dozen years. I used to go to a hip hop event there called Round Midnight back in the day -before I even began producing. So this opportunity is right at my heart.

The play is called The Etymology Of Bird by Zakiyyah Alexander. It was directed at the Black Rep by Megan Sandberg-Zakian. I was brought into the project by a wonderful person named Micah Selkind; I produced all new music for the play under his and Megan's direction. I thank all of the above for letting me be apart of this. You can read a Providence Journal article about the play HERE.

Alright Ok...

I'm coming to Cali to perform!! It's been a minute since I've been out there and I'm very amped for the opportunity. The main reason I'm coming out is Munky King Toys is releasing a limited edition 7" of my instrumentals. As as a result they've also set up a bunch of solo gigs in California for me and my main man Maker (of Glue) and live drawings by Angry Woebots.

The dates are as follows:

The 7", aptly titled "Lonely Town", will be for sale exclusively at all shows; mainly the Bordello Los Angeles show. Don't fret if you're under 21. The followup gig at Turntable Lab is all ages. Then we move up north to San Fran for another 21+ gig. I'm working on something last minute for an all ages show in the SF area.

My people at Munky King in Los Angeles are doing a limited run on 7" of two custom made instrumentals by yours truly. The material will sell exclusively at a Munky King showcase I'm doing out in Los Angeles at Bordello Bar on April 26th.

To get in the spirit of this honored collaboration, I've put together another podcast featuring my attempts at metamorphosis into a sample based instrumentalist. Please note how that was worded -haha.

NEW YEARS EVE...

Now 'ear this...I'm doing a New Years Eve gig in Providence. I'm not sure what I want to do yet. I already did my solo set just last month. I like to do different things for the hometown. I have a few ideas but I'm yet to settle on one. Count on this: it will be danceable, not so obscure.

And if someone comes up to me while I'm playing DANCE stuff and asks for something more danceable...I shall stop what I'm playing dead, get on the mic, say "going out by request...something more uptempo...", and then procede to play The Chicken Dance. Don't test, Molly -haha. I'll turn New Years Eve into a wedding...mad quickly.

On a serious note, consider eating here. It's one of my favorite places. The Cuban Sandwiches here are second only to the Medianoches I've had in Miami. It's a pleasure to play here again; a beautiful venue right in line with the others I've played of recent.

I can't believe I'm doing this. But here it is...

I'm up for the URB 1000. Don't ask because I truly don't know what that means. I was informed about it almost 6 months ago and have since found that -even though I want to- I can't bring myself to talk about it much. So here it is...

I read a recent New York Times article on Rick Rubin this morning. Somewhere around page 4 or 5 I needed some Pepto Bismol. I'm not hating on Rick...maybe it's the writers fault...I can't gauge which yet. I will state Rick Rubin is no music Gandhi or Vishnu. He's a music PT Barnum. And truthfully, there's NOTHING wrong with that. But to me, that's a world of difference. Then again, I'm challenging the validity of an article that constantly cites material things and physical appearance to contribute to a -assisted by the writer or formulated by the man himself - persona of Rick Rubin. Yeah, yeah the music industry is changing so much -haha. So much so...I almost can't believe it.

In other news -only because I consider myself a film buff- I will include I love No Country For Old Men. I've seen the film a few times now. I hear people say it's the Coens best. I don't think that's the issue. I believe people are trying to say, "the Coens are the best alive". As a result all the Coen brothers accomplishments, recent fumbles, and then a return to form get displaced on this one film. Are we really going to play Simon Cowell and debate if Fargo or The Big Lebowski are better? Hahah...come on now. In my opinion, it's better to consider / discuss how QT constantly uses the same formula in the guise of "style" and how the Coens have made classics in four or five different genres of film. Ok, go to back sleep now.

Thanksgiving update...

Here's an OK quality clip of Blak and I live at Kyma in Annapolis for the News Travels Fast record release show. There are other clips from the show from all of the performers that night located on my youtube page.

This is one of our rare stage performances. The place was so nice it was only right. I wish there were better quality vid to not only do the performance more justice but the venue. It was beautiful; one of the nicest places I've been in a while. Until AFTER this gig. It set off a fire of similar shows.

Now, I have ZERO clue how the hell I'm getting booked at these brand new, built two seconds ago, hip, new wave, five star restaurants. The past three gigs I've done have all LOOKED like places I probably could not afford a meal for my girlfriend and I. Dress up joints all day.

The second gig I played was also in Annapolis at a spot called Metropolitan. I drove past it back and forth about five times in denial...like "nah, I'm not playing there." Sure enough, that was the gig my man Scott set me up with. To give a clue how nice the place was: the governor of Maryland was there. O' Malley. Just chilling after work with some friends...drinking Guinness. I watched two secret service type dudes (donning suits and ears pieces) walk in and I got worried. I thought Bob Baer sent a couple of his fellows after me for asking him about Phillip Agee at that Syriana screening. Regardless, I was introduced to the man and gave him a copy of Indie Rock Blues.

Continuing the trend...

The show this past Wednesday night at Local 121 was great. Even though my set was so so a good time was had by all. I'd like to send a big thank you to the wonderful staff and TFO for putting it all down. Be sure to check him with guests spinning every Wednesday night on 121 Washington St. Downtown Providence.

The Providence Is Burning show was off the chain. Great, great time. Please be sure to check out anything associated with these fellas. I should have video from the performance up soon.

As for me, the shows are slowing down for a bit. I won't be out on the road this fall. I am wrapping up two different projects at the moment, solely produced by me. Both will be released in 2008. I'm also in the process of executing two other new projects -both long overdue.

Please excuse my vagueness but jinxes and assholes love chatting each other up. And that's one thing most anyone can understand. Thank you, thank you...

In the meantime look how fat, bald, and happy I am.

Plus my man Dj Signify is doing really well. He's on the road September through November with Aesop Rock, Blockhead, and some other really interesting sounding acts. He will be selling a tour only cd titled 45 Plus which includes some stuff we did together. The dates of the tour are listed on any of the linked artists webpages.

45 Plus also features music from a new collaboration between Signify and Blockhead called Nobody's Smiling. They have a new 7" coming out on Bully this month. Be on the lookout for that and his new album, Of Cities. Great, great stuff. I can't wait for people to hear it.

The last note is to my good friend and roomate Chris Warren -pictured above. This man engineered most everything I've done musically. Look at the credits to all of the albums listed to the right and his handiwork is there. He is heading off to Stanford in a few days to become more of a MAX MSP music geek. Joe Beats & Blak came together in the wake of significant pauses in both of their former groups. The pairing is simple: Joe on the beats, Blak on the mic. Their formula is even more straight ahead: simply pure hip hop music.

In a short time, they've already toured the east coast twice and released an 8 song introductory EP, "Strategery". They are currently in the process of working on a debut full length LP.

The Revisited Tour

The Revisited Tour was exactly that: a basic rerun of the Diverse Recourse Tour with an extension into Canada. This run was focused simply on getting Blak and I back on the road after working on our first full length album. As a result we created a product called Revisited; all of the songs left off our LP, combined with the highlights from Strategery. This tour was unique in that we did different types of gigs; radio appearances, instores, etc.

The Diverse Recourse Tour was done in promotion of my solo effort on Bully Records, Diverse Recourse. It featured myself and Blak Lungz as a duo and our man S.K.I.P (Of Nonsense Records). This run was a blast; definitely the most fun tour I've ever been apart of.

Rhythm Incursions is a radio show broadcast on Resonance 104.4 FM, London UK on Saturday nights at 9:30 pm. The show is also syndicated to ALL 96.9FM in Manchester, and now airs there on Saturday night / Sunday morning from midnight. They also have syndication with Samurai FM as well.

My first set for guest slot was in March 2007 in promotion of my album, Diverse Recourse. Over a year later, the core presenters invited me to host monthly. I agreed to do a bi monthly slot. My first official show aired in July and I shall host every other month at the top of the month. I am very flattered and excited to be apart of the team.
